Elon Musk’s X has started rolling out a new transparency feature on user profiles that discloses important information regarding an account’s background and history. The function named “About this account” reveals details like the user’s location, the frequency of username changes, the date they originally joined, and how the X app was accessed.
The feature was first highlighted by the company in October when Nikita Bier, the head of product at X, announced that testing of the display would start on his profile and those of X employees.
The aim is straightforward: provide individuals with sufficient context to determine if an account is authentic or trying to disseminate false information. For instance, if an account asserts it is located in a US state but its profile indicates activity from abroad, users might have grounds to doubt its intentions.
In recent days, an increasing number of users have claimed to observe the feature on their profiles after Bier answered a call for greater transparency with a commitment to implement it within 72 hours.
How to access the panel?
Gaining access to the panel is easy. On the website and mobile application, clicking the “Joined” date directs users to a page that shows the joining date, primary location, username change history, and the source of the app, like the US App Store or Google Play.
Nonetheless, the deployment is still restricted. TechCrunch, which reports on technology, highlights that although many users can access their personal information, the same panel is not currently displayed on other users’ profiles.
X also appears to allow individuals to confirm the correctness of their information and modify privacy settings. Users have the option to display either their country or a larger area, with this setting found in Privacy and Safety. Instagram already provides a similar transparency option, making X the newest platform to embrace this method.
