What the message on Yuzvendra Chahal’s t-shirt means

Indian cricketer Yuzvendra Chahal and choreographer Dhanashree Verma have officially parted ways after months of legal proceedings. The couple, who had been under public scrutiny since 2022, finalised their divorce on March 20, with a Mumbai family court granting their mutual consent petition.

Their joint divorce plea was initially filed on February 5, and on Thursday, both Chahal and Dhanashree appeared separately at the Bandra family court for the final settlement. Speaking to ANI, Chahal’s advocate Nitin Gupta confirmed the court’s decision, stating,

“The family court has accepted the joint petition filed by Chahal and Verma seeking divorce by mutual consent.”

Amidst the legal proceedings, a video of Yuzvendra Chahal went viral on social media, where he was seen wearing a black t-shirt with the words “Be your own sugar daddy” printed on it.

According to the Cambridge Dictionary, sugar daddy is defined as a term for “a rich and usually older man who buys presents for or gives money to a younger person, especially a woman, usually so that the younger person will spend time with him and have a sexual relationship with him.”

The legal battle between Chahal and Dhanashree

The divorce proceedings had been fast-tracked after the Bombay High Court intervened on Wednesday, urging the family court to decide the matter by Thursday. This decision was influenced by Chahal’s upcoming participation in the IPL 2024 as part of the Punjab Kings squad.

Much speculation surrounded the alimony settlement, with false reports circulating about a ₹60 crore payout to Dhanashree. However, official records revealed that Chahal actually paid ₹4.35 crore, with the family court initially refusing to waive the six-month cooling-off period due to partial compliance with the consent terms.

According to the court order, Chahal had paid ₹2.37 crore out of the ₹4.75 crore that was agreed upon. The marriage counsellor’s report also noted that there was only partial compliance with the mediation efforts. However, the Bombay High Court later ruled that Chahal was in compliance, as per the consent terms, stating that the remaining alimony was to be paid only after the divorce decree was granted.
