Taking strong exception to Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar’s comments on the judiciary, the Communist Party of India (CPI) has demanded that Chief Minister and TDP national president N. Chandrababu Naidu change his stance on the Waqf Act.

Addressing the media on Friday, CPI state secretary K. Ramakrishna said that it was unfortunate that Mr. Dhankhar, who holds a constitutional post, made direct comments ‘attacking the judiciary’.

“The Governors in many States are affiliated with the RSS. They are sitting on Bills passed by democratically elected governments for years, undermining the democratic spirit. The Supreme Court has recently ruled that Governors have no authority to stall such Bills. Yet, the Vice-President made unacceptable comments on the judiciary,” he said.

Mr. Ramakrishna said NDA allies such as Chief Ministers Chandrababu Naidu and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar— seen as secular leaders — supported the Waqf Amendment Bill, ‘helping spread unrest across the nation’.

“Mr. Naidu should distance himself from this controversial legislation,” he said.

Responding to a question about the new proposal to acquire over 43,000 acres of government land for capital project in Amaravati, Mr. Ramakrishna said that proposing to acquire another 43,000 acres of land shows that the government intends to focus development at only one place.

“The people are questioning the government’s focus only on Amaravati, saying that ignoring the comprehensive development of the State is not appropriate. Does development of the State mean just Amaravati and Polavaram?” he asked, while referring to the people from the backwards regions of the State.
