Veteran Kannada actor Sarigama Viji passed away at 76 at a private hospital in Bengaluru on January 15, 2024. The actor, who was 76, succumbed to multiple organ failure. He is survived by his two sons.
Viji, who began his journey in the Kannada film industry more than four decades ago, acted in over 250 movies. With a unique voice and a fine comic timing, Viji was cast in several humourous roles.
The actor began his journey in theatre. His most prominent play was Samsaradalli Sarigama, earning him the screen name ‘Sarigama Viji’. He directed and starred in the play that was staged more than 1300 times across several cities, including Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Delhi and Mumbai.
In films, his long association with Prabhakar and V Somashekhar is one of the highlights of his career. Apart from acting, Viji also co-directed several Kannada films.
Viji was also a respected name in the television circuit. He acted and directed several episodes of television dramas, with his comedy roles being the memorable ones on the small screen.

The mortal remains of Viji, who was admitted to hospital on January 12, 2025, will be kept in his Mahalakshmipuram residence till 10 am on January 16, 2025. The actor’s funeral will be held at the Chamarajpet crematorium on January 16, 2025.
