US Government Shutdown Live Updates: After the Senate approved the funding bill by a 60-40 vote in favour of the resolution, the lower chamber of the US Congress is set to vote on the measure today to end the longest running government shutdown in US history. It’s been 43 days since the shutdown began and hundreds of thousands of federal workers have been working without pay, furloughed and even laid off by the federal administration. The White House has said that President Donald Trump is ready to sign the bill after the House of Representatives passes it.
US Senate approved the bill: After a stalemate of over 40 days, the US Senate on Monday passed the government’s spending bill with the help of eight Democrats, who voted across the aisle and in favour of the GOP backed bill. The Republicans needed 60 votes for the bill to clear the Senate but their numbers stood at 52. However, eight Democratic leaders switched away from the party line which eventually angered several leaders in their caucus. The bill cleared the Senate, paving the way to end the federal shutdown.

Shutdown impact: The government shutdown has affected thousands of federal workers, some of whom have been working for the past six weeks without getting paid, while most of them have been fired and even furloughed. The shortage of air traffic controllers has led the FAA to reduce flights at 40 major airports, leading to a daily cancellation and delays of thousands of flights, which has affected millions of passengers across the country.
