The under-construction new building of Bone and Joint (B&J) Hospital at Barzulla in Srinagar has not been completed for last five years. The construction work was started in 2019 and the building was to get completed in December 2022.
But it is missing the deadlines one after the other since then. During the devastating floods in 2014 the Bone and Joint Hospital Buildings had suffered massive damage. According to reports one of the buildings was declared unsafe. Later, the authorities decided to construct a new 120 bedded building with modern facilities.
The plan for the new building was made in 2015 and the construction work started in 2019. Reports say that the work was not speedily done to meet the deadline. The delay in the completion of the building is affecting the healthcare in the hospital. In March 2020 an old and operational building of the hospital was gutted in a fire incident.
This adversely affected the patient care. The patients were then shifted to SKIMS Medical College Hospital Bemina and SMHS Hospital. The gutted building was declared unsafe. The speedy completion of the new building is imperative in view of the problems, the patients are facing due to lack of required facilities.
The authorities said that the new building will now be completed in July. It is being hoped that the deadline is met and not missed again. All steps should be taken so that the construction work is completed in July.
It is not only the Bone and Joint Hospital building but all other under-construction government hospital buildings must be completed in time. All the hospital must have the required space, infrastructure and facilities.
This is very important for the better healthcare. Reports said that construction work of hospital buildings in some areas is not being done speedily.
Due to slow pace of work there is delay in the completion. The authorities must prioritise the timely completion of the construction work of new government hospital buildings.
