Hyderabad, April 14 (TSIT): In a landmark development coinciding with the birth anniversary of Dr BR Ambedkar, the Telangana government on Monday formally issued the Government Order (GO) on the Scheduled Caste (SC) Classification, marking a decisive step toward rationalising reservations within the SC community in the state.
In a ceremonial event held at the state secretariat, the Cabinet Sub-Committee on SC Categorisation presented the first copy of the GO to Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, symbolising the culmination of an extensive consultative process aimed at ensuring equitable representation for all sub-groups within the SC population.
Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister said the move was a tribute to Dr Ambedkar’s lifelong struggle for social justice and equality. “This government is committed to delivering justice to every section of society, and this classification is a progressive step towards correcting historical imbalances within the SC category,” he said.
The Telangana Scheduled Castes (Rationalisation of Reservations) Act, 2025, along with its accompanying Rules, lays down the framework for a categorised reservation system, ensuring that benefits meant for SCs are more equitably distributed among the various sub-castes. The GO provides clarity on the criteria, process, and implementation of categorised quotas and mandates periodic review and reporting by a designated nodal agency.
According to official sources, the classification was driven by comprehensive socio-economic studies and public representations, and aims to address the uneven access to opportunities within the broader SC category. The Act empowers the state government to allocate specific reservation percentages to sub-categories, while ensuring compliance with constitutional provisions and Supreme Court judgments.
The announcement on Ambedkar Jayanti has added symbolic and political significance to the decision, which has long been a demand from multiple SC communities seeking intra-category justice.
State ministers, senior officials, and representatives from various SC groups were present at the function. The Chief Minister lauded the Cabinet Sub-Committee and the Social Welfare Department for expediting the legislative and administrative process.
The GO comes at a time when Telangana is making bold legislative strides in social equity—recently initiating measures for gig workers and launching employment-oriented welfare programs.
With this initiative, Telangana becomes one of the first states to formally codify sub-categorisation of SC reservations into law, potentially paving the way for other Indian states to follow suit.
