The devil is in the details

For the special occasion, the Blank Space singer chose a black and white striped Ralph Lauren halter dress, styling it with a pair of brown Louis Vuitton heels and a gold Cartier Santos Demoiselle Quartz watch with diamond-encrusted dial to accessorise her look. Unlike other celebrity engagement rings that echo modern styles, Swift chose to stand out with a vintage rock designed by Kindred Lubeck of Artifex Fine Jewelry. The brilliant-cut old mine diamond featured rounded corners, bezel-set in yellow gold with engraving on the side of the band.

Jewellery expert Benjamin Khordipour at Estate Diamond Jewelry, New York, shared some details about the rock with Brides Magazine, elaborating that Swift was proposed to with a stunning “elongated antique cushion-cut diamond that is approximately eight carats, F color, and VS1 clarity.”

According to him, the ring was “handcrafted in 18k yellow gold and the center diamond is set with needle point prongs” that perfectly match the antique style. Smaller diamonds and hand-engravings adorn the shoulders of her setting.”

What is so special about an old cut diamond?

According to a blog post by fine jewellery house Lebrusan Studio, the old mine cut (or cushion cut) enjoyed its heyday from the early 18th century to the latter end of the 19th century, and is now most commonly found in jewellery inspired by the Georgian and Victorian eras. It evolved from the 33-facet cushion-shaped Peruzzi cut of the 1700s and is considered the earliest version of the modern brilliant cut, as it was the first to utilise 58 facets.

“The term ‘old mine cut’ is considered to have entered the common vernacular in the late 1800s, at a time when diamond production in Africa began to eclipse that of the ‘old mines’ of Brazil and India. Any diamond originating from Brazil or India and cut with 58 facets and a squarish shape was labelled an old mine cut,” mentioned the blog.

They further explained that early diamond cutters formed old mine cut diamonds using other diamonds as cutting tools, since diamonds are the hardest known natural substance on earth and thus capable only of being sliced by another diamond.

Naturally, this laborious technique of rubbing two diamonds together by hand resulted in dimensions that varied from stone to stone. Every old mine-cut diamond is therefore totally unique; often endearingly lumpy and always bursting with personality.
