Strike by ASHAs completes 62 days

Family members and representatives of various people’s struggles gathered in front of the Secretariat on Saturday in solidarity with the striking ASHAs (Accredited Social Health Activists) as their agitation entered the 62nd day.

A resolution put forward by the mass gathering called for making the protest a success and urged the government to accept the demand of the ASHAs and reach a settlement at the earliest.

The resolution reminded that ASHAs were the backbone of the health sector in the State. Despite the ridicule and insults flung at the protest that is under way to seek an increase in remuneration of ASHAs, the stir had managed to garner national attention and was even mentioned internationally, the resolution said.

Kerala Sahithya Akademi chairperson K. Satchidanandan, in a video message, said both the Union and the State governments were responsible for the ASHAs plight. They appeal to the State government was to at least allow a slight increase in their honorarium so that the strike could be ended. The State government’s responses, though, were unfortunate, considering it was the one that had increased their honorarium in the past, Mr. Satchidanandan said.
