Ever since renowned filmmaker SS Rajamouli revealed his desire to adapt the Hindu epic Mahabharata for the big screen, anticipation has been high among fans. Considering his expertise in creating epic films, which he demonstrated in his directorials such as Baahubali: The Beginning (2015), Baahubali 2: The Conclusion (2017), and RRR (2022), fans think that only he can do true justice to the expansive world of the Mahabharata. While the project is still in its conceptual stage, Rajamouli recently made an announcement about it that has sparked excitement among many.
At an event recently, the filmmaker was asked about the rumour concerning Telugu star Nani’s presence in the project. Without revealing many details, Rajamouli made a statement which itself grabbed the attention of many. “All I can say is that Nani is definitely a part of it,” he said while taking part in a pre-release event in Hyderabad for Nani’s upcoming actioner HIT: The Third Case. The actor-director duo previously worked together in the fantasy actioner Eega (2012), which earned both Nani and Rajamouli widespread acclaim.

Opening up about his vision for the Mahabharata adaptation, SS Rajamouli had previously revealed that the franchise would feature at least 10 movies. “If I get to the point of making Mahabharata, it would take me a year just to read the versions of Mahabharata that are available in the country. At present, I can only assume that it would be a 10-part film,” Rajamouli said during an interview with his brother-in-law Dr AV Guruva Reddy in 2023. He added, “Every film I make, I feel that I’m learning something to ultimately make Mahabharata. So that’s my dream, and every step is towards that.”
Interestingly, Rajamouli had spoken about the project as far back as 2017, revealing that he had discussed it with Bollywood icon Aamir Khan. “Yeah, I met Aamir ji once quite some time back. We spoke about the Mahabharata. I know that he’s very much interested in doing the film. But as I said, at present I am not thinking about anything beyond Baahubali. Mahabharata is definitely not after this,” he said.
SS Rajamouli is currently working on a movie with Mahesh Babu.
