(Reuters/File Photo) At least 11 people, including a three-year-old child, were killed after gunmen stormed a hostel in South Africa’s administrative capital, Pretoria, in the early hours of Sunday, Reuters reported, citing Police.
Police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe confirmed that 25 people were shot, with 14 injured and taken to hospital. “Ten died on the scene, and one succumbed to injuries in hospital,” she said. Among the young victims were a 12-year-old boy and a 16-year-old girl.
Authorities say the attack appears linked to the country’s ongoing struggle with illegal bars, or shebeens, many of which operate without regulation and have become hotspots for violent crime. “These illegal shebeens are really giving us a problem,” Mathe told broadcaster eNCA. “A lot of murders are being reported at these illegal establishments.”
