Srinagar, July 9: In the heart of Srinagar, amidst the bustling streets and vibrant culture, Kounsar Jan from Chattabal is rewriting norms and breaking stereotypes as the city’s first female e-rickshaw driver.
For over a year now, she has switched many jobs to support her family and empower herself economically.
Kounsar Jan’s journey into the realm of e-rickshaw driving was born out of necessity. Facing initial skepticism and resistance, Kounsar persisted with the support of her family. Her father’s disability and her husband’s health concerns only fuelled her determination further. “I knew I had to step up. It was about more than just earning money; it was about proving that women can excel in any field,” she affirmed.
Throughout her journey, Kounsar has found unwavering support from her family, particularly her husband, who, despite health setbacks, stands by her side in her pursuit of financial independence. “My husband believes in equality. He encourages me to strive for my goals,” Kounsar proudly said. This familial solidarity has been crucial in her ability to defy norms and pursue her aspirations.
“I wanted to ensure my family’s financial stability, especially for my father-in-law. I didn’t want them to suffer,” she shared, reflecting on her initial motivations.
Driving her e-rickshaw daily has not only provided Kounsar with a steady income but also boosted her confidence. “I can earn up to Rs 3000 a day on busy days,” she remarked, highlighting the economic potential of her chosen profession. Looking ahead, Kounsar dreams of expanding her enterprise by purchasing another e-rickshaw, envisioning a future where she can further support her family and contribute to her community’s economic fabric.
Kounsar’s pioneering role has not gone unnoticed. Fayaz Ahmad associated with motor sector commended her initiative and perseverance. “Women like Kounsar are reshaping societal norms by demonstrating their capability and determination,” he noted, acknowledging the prevailing stereotypes that confine women to traditional roles in Kashmiri society. “It’s time to encourage and appreciate women for their contributions beyond the home,” he added.
While Kounsar has faced challenges along her path, including societal expectations and occasional prejudice, her resilience remains steadfast. “I want to inspire other women to break barriers and pursue their dreams,” she asserted passionately. Her story resonates as a beacon of hope for women across Kashmir, demonstrating that with determination and support, anything is possible.”
