Retro trailer: The countdown has begun for the release of Karthik Subbaraj’s much-anticipated Suriya-starrer Retro. While the project had been generating significant buzz since initial reports regarding it emerged, the hype has only gone through the roof with the arrival of the movie’s trailer, which underscored that Retro would be a full-on mass entertainer, with the signatures of both Karthik Subbaraj and Suriya all over it.
The nearly three minutes long trailer transports viewers to a bygone era where Suriya’s character appears to be a man trying to escape violence — only for it to catch up with him time and again.
The trailer opens with a man asking Suriya to put on a show, setting the stage for the introduction of key characters played by Pooja Hegde, Jayaram, Prakash Raj, Joju George, and others. As the trailer unfolds, a series of intense action sequences follows, including a man preparing for war. Amid the chaos, Suriya’s character makes a promise to his love interest—to stay away from violence, rowdyism, and hooliganism. However, he struggles to keep that promise. In a powerful moment, Suriya’s character reflects, “Our separated lives over the past years almost changed her into a Buddha, and me into a demon.” The trailer then delves into how he navigates his turbulent world and confronts the forces pulling him back into violence.

The trailer cut was crafted by renowned filmmaker-editor Alphonse Puthren. Bankrolled jointly by Stone Bench Creations and 2D Entertainment, Retro also features Pooja Hegde, Jayaram, Joju George, Singampuli and Nassar in key roles. While the movie’s music is composed by Santhosh Narayanan, its cinematography and editing are handled by Shreyaas Krishna and Shafique Mohamed Ali, respectively. For Suriya, Retro’s success is extremely important as his last film, Siva’s Kanguva (2024), had bombed at the box office.
Opening up about his experience working with Suriya, Karthik, who makes his return to the director’s chair following the widely acclaimed Jigarthanda DoubleX, shared during a recent chat with Vikatan, “Right from the way his eyes move to the dialogue delivery and body language, Suriya sir has a firm grasp on everything. He is a pure artiste, and I could feel his passion ring through till the dubbing process. He loves cinema. He only wants to do films that are new to him, both as an actor and as a person. He doesn’t want to take anything for granted.”
Retro will hit the screens worldwide on May 1.
