Rain disrupts traffic on Srinagar-Jammu NH

Ramban, Jul 8: Following a brief spell of rain, the movement of vehicular traffic was disrupted for some time due to mudslides in the Karool area of Ramban on the ever-busy Srinagar-Jammu National Highway late Tuesday afternoon.

An official of NHAI said that following rain that lashed the area Tuesday evening around 5:30 pm, a mudslide and slush were triggered at two different places between Ramban and Karool.

They said men and machinery stationed in the area immediately pressed into service to clear the mudslide and slush accumulated on the down (Jammu-bound) tube.

They said slush and mudslides are being cleared.

He said traffic was diverted through another tube.

Officials of NHAI said accumulated mudslides were being cleared from the road in Karool.

Senior Superintendent of Traffic Police, National Highway, Ramban, Adil Hamid, said road restoration work was going on in Karool.

Earlier, during the day, the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway remained open for two-way traffic of Amarnath Yatra and passenger Light Motor Vehicles (LMVs) and one-way traffic of heavy vehicles for Jammu.

However, traffic authorities said that the traffic movement remained slow due to breakdowns of a few vehicles and single lane road stretches at Nashri, Dalwass, and between Maroog and Kishtwari Pather sector between Nashri and Banihal.

A Police officer said hundreds of Amarnath Yatra vehicles and passenger LMVs plied towards their respective destinations in Srinagar and Jammu.

They said heavy vehicles released from Jakhani, Udhampur, headed towards Srinagar.

Meanwhile, the Jammu and Kashmir Traffic Department issued a fresh advisory for Wednesday stating that, subject to fair weather and better road conditions, Amarnath Yatra convoy, LMVs, passenger and private cars would be allowed from both sides on the highway.

They said in view of the Amarnath  Yatra, Srinagar-bound passenger LMVs would be released from 6 am to 12 pm, from Nagrota, Jammu, and from Jakheni, Udhampur, from 7 am to 1 pm.

The cut-off timings for Jammu-bound vehicles from Qazigund, Kashmir, have been fixed from 11:30 am to 2 pm.

Subject to fair weather and better road conditions, heavy vehicles would be allowed from Qazigund, Kashmir, towards Jammu after assessing the road and traffic situation on the highway on Wednesday.

They mentioned in the advisory that in view of the Amarnath Yatra, J&K administration in order to provide hassle-free movement of trucks carrying fresh perishable had decided that all empty diesel and petrol tankers, LPG tankers, and empty LPG gas tankers up to 10 tyres would use only Mughal Road while returning to Jammu from Srinagar.

The Traffic Department also issued an advisory for the commuters belonging to Reasi, Katra, Udhampur, Patnitop, Doda, and Ramban towns and asked them to keep their photo ID cards with them to prove their identification after the cut-off timing from Jammu and Udhampur so that their movement could be facilitated smoothly.

They advised commuters and vehicle operators not to undertake journeys on the highway without confirming the status of the road from the Traffic Control unit (TCU) Srinagar, Jammu, Udhampur, and Ramban on Wednesday.
