Jammu, Feb 19: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Wednesday asked the government to publish a “comprehensive white paper on 1986 riots and subsequent events leading to decades of turmoil in Jammu and Kashmir.”
BJP spokesperson and former MLC Girdhari Lal Raina raised this demand in a presser here, while recalling, what he alleged “horrific events of February 1986 in Kashmir that changed the course of history of Jammu and Kashmir.”
“What happened in 1986 was the root cause of decades of death and destruction witnessed by the innocent citizens of J&K, including the displacement of the minority Hindus in Kashmir valley. However, there has been a conscious effort to suppress 1986 events and point out later events as cause of trouble,” Raina alleged.
“Such was the situation that the army had to be called at several worst hit places and the incumbent government was to be dismissed. It is, therefore, essential to bring to surface the facts and expose real culprits behind the mayhem. The most important reason for keeping the memory of 1986 alive is its peculiarity of being the beginning of the end of coexistence, synchronicity and long-standing harmony among various religious communities in Kashmir,” Raina said.
The BJP leader said, “It will go a long way in nailing the lies of Congress and other like-minded parties about 1987.”
