Sopore, Aug 2: A significant community programme aimed at addressing contemporary social issues was held at Masjid-e-Usmaniya, Marajpora Sopore. Organised by the Awqaf Committee, the event brought together religious scholars, civil society representatives, and community leaders in a united call for social reform and moral revival.
The programme served as a platform for open dialogue on the various challenges affecting the societal fabric, particularly in the Kashmir Valley.
Addressing the gathering, Mufti Bashir Ahmad emphasized that true and lasting solutions to today’s social evils lie in returning to the teachings of the Holy Qur’an and the Hadith. He urged individuals and families to reconnect with Islamic values as the foundation for a peaceful and just society.
Latif Ahmad Wani, President of Anjuman Moin-ul-Islam, highlighted the moral crisis in society, particularly the erosion of truthfulness. “One of the gravest concerns we face today is our reluctance to speak the truth. We must build the moral courage to be honest in all aspects of life,” he said.
Aashiq Hussain Zaki, Chairman of Civil Society Sopore, drew attention to the rising infiltration of global criminal influences into the Valley. “From drug abuse to online gambling, the crimes of the world are now creeping into our homes. Online gambling in particular is proving to be a silent killer, especially among our youth. The situation demands mass awareness, strong community action, and immediate policy-level interventions,” he stressed.
Javid Ahmad, social activist and President of Badshah Masjid Sopore, shared their successful model of tackling the drug menace through a collective community approach, underscoring the power of local-level collaboration.
Several other speakers echoed similar concerns, stressing the need for unity, awareness, and grassroots engagement to address social challenges effectively. The programme concluded with a collective resolution by participants to take practical steps for the creation of a morally upright and socially responsible society.
