Police register first-ever e-FIR via WhatsApp at Kulgam

Srinagar, Mar 16: In a major step in digital policing, making the complaint registration process more efficient and accessible for citizens, the Police in Kulgam registered its first electronic First Information Report (e-FIR) at Police Station Qazigund, following a complaint lodged via WhatsApp.

A statement of J&K Police issued here said that the complaint was filed by Bashir Ahmad Khanday, wherein he stated that on March 12,  an unknown person, after monitoring his transition activity within the ATM at Chowgam quickly took out his ATM card and exchanged it tactfully.

“After that, I received messages of deduction of an amount of Rs 22,000 from my bank account,” the complainant said.

The complainant requested legal action against the unknown person and for recovery of his stolen money.

After examining the complaint, Police took cognisance of the matter and registered an e-FIR under case FIR No 38/2025 under Sections 303 and 318 of the BNS at Police Station Qazigund.

“To strengthen public safety and justice, the government has introduced new criminal laws that enable citizens to register FIRs through social media platforms as this innovative initiative aims to make the process of reporting crimes more accessible, efficient, and citizen-friendly. With the rising popularity of social media, this move is expected to revolutionise the way people interact with law enforcement agencies,” the statement said.
