PDD cracks down on illegal use of banned heaters, boilers in Kishtwar

Kishtwar, Dec 9: Power Development Department (PDD) Division Kishtwar conducted a rigorous inspection drive in the town area to curb the unabated use of banned nichrome-based heaters and boilers, as well as to seize unauthorised loads.

The operation led by Assistant Executive Engineer Showkat Khan of the Electric Sub-Division Kishtwar, along with a dedicated team of engineers and field staff, aimed to prevent the overloading of feeders and safeguard expensive power infrastructure and cables from frequent damage.

During the drive, approximately 140 banned and unauthorised heaters, boilers and other gadgets were confiscated and destroyed by the team. This proactive measure resulted in a significant reduction of nearly half a megawatt (MW) of load, bringing much-needed relief to the strained power distribution system.

The PDD emphasised that such inspection drives will not be limited to urban areas but will also extend to rural areas in the coming days. The department aims to eliminate the use of banned heating devices and ensure adherence to power usage regulations across the district.

Additionally, the department issued a stern warning against tampering with electricity meters. Individuals found bypassing meters will face heavy penalties and legal action under the Electricity Act, which includes fines and imprisonment.

The Power Development Department has urged residents to cooperate by refraining from using unauthorised appliances and adhering to legal power usage. The department also appealed to the public to report instances of meter tampering or unauthorised use of power to the authorities.
