The National Investigation Agency on Wednesday has filed a first supplementary chargesheet against Tahawwur Rana, who was extradited from the US nearly 16 years after his arrest for his role in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks.
A close associate of 26/11 Lashkar-e-Taiba scout David Coleman Headley, Rana was brought to India on April 10 after his extradition from the US. He is accused of aiding and abetting the reconnaissance carried out by Headley, with whom he went to school in Pakistan, for the 26/11 attacks and of participating in the conspiracy by providing crucial logistical support to the terrorists who attacked Mumbai.
“The NIA has filed the first supplementary chargesheet before the Hon’ble NIA Special Court in Patiala House against Rana. The case pertains to a criminal conspiracy hatched by Headley, Rana and other members of LeT and HUJI to carry out terrorist attacks in different parts of India,” a NIA spokesperson said in a statement.
“The supplementary chargesheet pertains to the submission of documents regarding the extradition of Rana and additional evidence collected by the NIA. Additionally, in compliance with the order dated June 6, issued by the Hon’ble NIA Special Court, the NIA has submitted a compliance report under Section 207 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) regarding the supply of documents related to the earlier chargesheet filed in 2011. Further investigations in the case are continuing,” the spokesperson said.
Currently, Rana is lodged in a ward meant for very high-risk prisoners in Delhi’s Tihar Jail.
Rana is inmate number 1784. The block where he is being kept is less crowded than the others within the jail complex. The ward where he is being kept is a separate ward. No prisoner from the other wards is allowed to enter, a source in Tihar Jail said.
