NEET UG 2024 Hearing Live Updates: The Chief Justice of India asked of the 23 lakh candidates who appeared in the examination, how many of them changed exam centres during the correction window.

The NTA said that 15,000 candidates utilised the correction window.

The CJI said the court wants to know of those who changed their centres, how many have made it to the top 1.08 lakh.

NEET UG 2024 Hearing Live Updates: The Solicitor General said that the first 100 candidates are distributed across 95 centres in 56 cities and 18 states and UTs. This distribution highlights diversity in results, he added.

The CJI asked the NTA to give a city-wise breakdown of the top 100 ranks, to which the NTA replied that they are spread across 91 places. Four of them are from one exam centre in Lucknow.

Sr Advocate Hooda pointed out that the information provided by the NTA does not capture 9 candidates in Jaipur in the top 100.

NEET UG 2024 Hearing Live Updates: Senior Advocate Narendra Hooda also argued that the IIT Madras data focuses on 23 lakh students when the data should have been analysed for 1 lakh students who obtained the seats.

Referring to IIT Madras’s data analysis report, Advocate Hooda said that it can not be relied upon as there is a conflict of interest since the institute’s director is a member of the NTA’s governing body.

The Solicitor General clarified that subject to further verification, the Chairman of the IIT, who organises the JEE Advanced examination during a particular year, is an ex-officio member of the NTA. However, the Director who prepared the data analysis report, is not a member of the agency.

NEET UG 2024 Hearing Live Updates: The Solicitor General has informed the Supreme Court bench that the Central Bureau of Investigation has filed a second status report last evening regarding the ongoing investigation into the alleged paper leak and other malpractices.

The Supreme Court hearing on the NEET UG matter has started.

The CBI has questioned three students from AIIMS Patna in connection with the NEET-UG paper leak case, officials said Thursday. Further details on the students being quizzed are awaited.

“It is submitted that the incident at Bihar is a criminal activity, clandestinely committed by unscrupulous individuals, which is beyond the control of the answering respondent. News reports have inaccurately covered the incident and drawn conclusions prior to the completion of the investigation, thereby contributing to public misconceptions,” the NTA submitted.

NEET UG 2024 SC Hearing Live Updates: The agency also addressed the possibility of deserving candidates not getting admissions due to high marks. It said that selection is based on ranks, not marks, and relative merit is the most significant factor.

“It is incorrect to say that deserving candidates would be deprived of their opportunities as the selection is based on rank and not due to marks. It is also submitted that in a competitive examination, relative merit is most important and significant,” the NTA said.

NEET UG 2024 SC Hearing Live Updates: Regarding the allegations that NEET UG’s integrity has been compromised, the NTA said they were premature and based on unverified sources.

“It is submitted that the courts cannot take cognisance of media reports, which are unsubstantiated and misleading. Furthermore, the media reports are contradictory and falsified with the material placed by the petitioners themselves,” the NTA said.

NEET UG 2024 SC Hearing Live Updates: The agency, in its statement, attributed the increase in NEET UG scores to the reduction of the test syllabus by 22 to 25 per cent and the increase in the number of candidates by 15 per cent compared to the previous year.

“Discussions within the Telegram channel indicate that members identified the video as fake. The timestamp was manipulated to create a false impression of an early leak. Comments and discussions on social media further corroborate that the images in the video were edited, and the date was intentionally modified to suggest a May 4 leak. The screenshots highlight the fabricated nature of the claims made in the video”, the NTA affidavit read.

The NTA, which filed a separate affidavit on similar lines, said it has carried out an analysis of distribution of marks at the national, state and city levels.

“This analysis indicates that the distribution of marks is quite normal and there seems to be no extraneous factor, which would influence the distribution of marks,” the NTA said in its affidavit.

NEET UG SC Hearing Live Updates: The Centre, in its affidavit to the Supreme Court, stated that a data analysis report by IIT Madras revealed no indications of mass malpractice or any localized set of candidates being benefitted leading to abnormal scores.

According to the Centre, IIT-Madras conducted an analysis of the top 1,40,000 ranks for 2023 and 2024 to detect any abnormalities.

The court said that authorities shall identify the modalities to be followed to segregate the tainted from the untainted, if possible.
