Kashmiri MBBS student ‘beaten, dragged’ at medical college in Karnataka

Srinagar, Feb 19: A student from south Kashmir’s Anantnag district pursuing MBBS at Al-Ameen Medical College in Karnataka was allegedly assaulted and ragged by a group of seniors from the same college.

The incident sparked widespread demand for action against the accused and the safeguarding of the victim student.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said action had been initiated against the four accused by the Karnataka government.

The incident was brought to light by the Jammu Kashmir Student Association (JKSA) which demanded action against the perpetrators of the alleged attack.

As per the details shared by JKSA, an incident of ragging and physical assault occurred at Al-Ameen Medical College in Karnataka.

“Hamim, a 2nd-year MBBS student from Kashmir, was brutally assaulted by senior students from the 2019 batch while watching a cricket match. The victim student had faced harassment from seniors before,” JKSA’s Nasir Khuehami shared on X. “The victim student was made to sing, dance, and was beaten in the hostel room.”

The alleged assault on Kashmiri students sparked widespread outrage over social media.

CM Omar took to micro-blogging site X to assure action against the perpetrators.

“I have spoken to @CMofKarnataka @siddaramaiah ji about this unfortunate incident. He has assured me that the police have filed an FIR and necessary action will be taken,” he posted. “The four accused of perpetrating this ragging and thrashing have been identified.”

The incident of assault was widely condemned by netizens, with many demanding swift action against the perpetrators of this heinous crime.

Many questioned why Kashmiri students are increasingly becoming targets of violent attacks across the country.

This incident is part of a disturbing trend, with numerous attacks on Kashmiri shawl sellers and students studying in colleges outside the region being reported at an alarming rate in recent months.

As one user pointed out, “At this rate, our students and business community may be forced to reconsider moving outside Kashmir.”

Earlier, NC chief spokesperson Tanvir Sadiq while taking cognisance of the incident shared on X, “I spoke with Naseer Ahmed Sahab, Advisor to the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Karnataka, (@CMofKarnataka) who just told me that a team, along with police officers, are now at the college. The police are filing an FIR, based on which the college will take disciplinary action against the senior students.”
