On Saturday, Kalamkaval recorded an overall 49.32% occupancy in theatres. Morning shows logged 30.01%, afternoon shows rose to 44.02%, evening shows reached 56.73%, and night shows peaked at 66.53%. Kochi reported the highest occupancy, at 69.25%.
The makers of Kalamkaval also announced the film’s worldwide box office figures on social media, stating that it minted ₹15.7 crore on its first day. “#Kalamkaval takes the Worldwide Box Office by storm as it Grossed 15.7 Cr on Day 1. Thanks to Our Audience Across The Globe for the Biggest Support and the blockbuster opening. #Mammootty #MammoottyKampany #JithinKJose @mammukka,” the tweet read.
On Sunday, Mammootty took to his X handle and thanked fans for their support. “Last 2 days have been nothing short of overwhelming. I am truly blown away by the love #Kalamkaval has been receiving since its release. Thank you for your trust in my choices,” he wrote.
Yet, despite its commercial momentum, Kalamkaval has drawn sharply divided reactions from critics. An excerpt from SCREEN’s review of the film read, “With the crime thriller Kalamkaval, helmed by debutant Jithin K Jose, Mammootty has once again proven why he is the ultimate ‘people’s superstar,’ who goes the extra mile to ensure that the masses who love him aren’t offered a mere rehash of everything that they have seen him in so far. Instead, he has presented them with a ‘Mammootty like never before,’ going toe-to-toe with the beast that is superstardom, which often steers many away from taking on roles that challenge the actor within them. Nonetheless, the question that remains is: Has Kalamkaval made the best use of the uninhibited actor/star and offered an unprecedented experience to the audience? The answer to that might not be as gratifying.”
