NEW DELHI: In exercise of the powers conferred by Clause (1) of Article 217 of the Constitution of India, the President on Thursday appointed Justice Harish Tandon, judge of the Calcutta High Court as Chief Justice of the Orissa High Court.
The Supreme Court Collegium on March 6 had recommended the appointment of the Calcutta High Court judge as Chief Justice of the Orissa High Court.
The recommendation was made following the retirement of Chief Justice Chakradhari Sharan Singh on January 19.
Justice Arindam Sinha, currently serving as acting chief justice of the Orissa High Court, was recommended for transfer to the Allahabad High Court by the collegium on Thursday. The recommendation is awaiting approval from the Central government.
Justice Harish Tandon was appointed as a judge of the Calcutta High Court on April 13, 2010 and has served there since.
He ranks seventh in the All-India Seniority of High Court Judges and is a senior puisne judge in his parent High Court.
Before his elevation, he practiced in civil matters at the Calcutta High Court.
