John Cena accepts he hated The Rock before Wrestlemania match, apologised to Dwayne Johnson’s mom later: ‘I knew I had to lose the moment…’ | Hollywood News

WrestleMania is the biggest event in the calendar of any wrestling fan, and the 28th edition of the event was one of the biggest in history. Apart from other legendary matches such as The Undertaker vs. Triple H and CM Punk vs. Chris Jericho, the main event saw The Rock take on John Cena. The match was built up for more than a year, and both superstars delivered promos one after another in typical WWE fashion. What people may not realise is that Cena and The Rock weren’t just feuding because of the script, and the two superstars genuinely did not like one another. In a recent interview Cena shed some light on the match and how both men did not see eye to eye going into the event.

While talking to Vanity Fair, Cena told the channel that everything people saw on their television set was 100% real, as both men had some real problems with each other. He said, “During a lot of moments leading up to that fight, we crossed the line of sports entertainment, and people could tell that we really hated each other. The two of us had mixed opinions of each other going into that match. Even though he had always been cordial to me, I did something foolish and started drumming up rumours about things I had no idea about.”

Cena admitted that many of the things he did were great for the promotional aspect of the match, but they may have crossed the professional line that existed between the men. He added, “For a year straight I kept telling people that there is no way he was going to beat me, but I knew that he was going to win the moment the feud started. The first thing I did after he beat me was apologise to his mother, and she was extremely gracious and a class act like always. Then I went right into Dwayne’s locker room and apologised to him, and the audience was entertained and happy, and that always helps patch things between two people in the company and lay rest to any bad blood between them.”

The Rock did win at Wrestlemania 28, only to set up a rematch with Cena the following year at the same event. The two went head to head once again, and this time Cena emerged victorious. In the current scenario, Dwayne has taken more of a backseat to WWE and portrays the character of the ‘final boss’ who controls everything from the background. Cena, on the other hand, is the current WWE Champion and is serving out his last year as an in-ring performer with the WWE.
