Srinagar, Mar 11: The per capita income (PCI) of Jammu and Kashmir has remained below the national average with UT’s PCI estimated to be ₹1,54,703 in 2024-25 in comparison to the national average of ₹2,00,162.
The PCI is a measure of the amount of money earned per person.
As per the Economic Survey 2024-25, the PCI of J&K at current prices is estimated to attain a level of Rs 1,54,703 in 2024-25 (advance estimates) as compared to national level per capita income of Rs 2,00,162 in 2024-25. The Economic Survey report however states that the per capita income of J&K at current prices is anticipated to grow at a rate of 10.6 percent in 2024-25 as compared to all-India growth of 8.7 percent.
“In the most recent years (2023-24 to 2024-25), J&K has shown robust growth in PCI, outpacing the national growth rate,” the report notes.
“J&K’s per capita income has also seen a steady increase, indicative of improving economic conditions and rising living standards. In 2024-25, the per capita income of J&K is estimated to be ₹1,54,703 compared to the national average of ₹2,00,162. The growth in per capita income reflects the positive impact of economic diversification and the region’s focus on enhancing productivity across all sectors,” reads the Economic Survey.
The per capita income of Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed significant growth, increasing by approximately 148% between 2014-15 and 2024-25, according to data from the UT government’s Planning Department.
Even though the J&K’s PCI remains below the national average, as per the 2024-25 Economic Survey the gap has been narrowing, as the ratio of J&K’s PCI to India’s PCI has risen from 71.9% in 2014-15 to nearly 77.3% in 2024-25.
Furthermore, the PCI figures show that J&K’s per capita income offers a better view in comparison to the northern states from 2019-20 to 2023-24 period with UT’s per capita income registering a compound annual growth rate of 8.3 percent which is higher than that of Punjab (6.22 percent), Delhi (6.74 percent), and Himachal Pradesh (6 percent).
