Ramban, Oct 1: Udhampur Police arrested a drug peddler and recovered nearly 20 kgs of contraband (poppy straw) from his possession in Chenani area on Wednesday.
The arrest was made when the accused was travelling from Srinagar to Jammu, police said.
“Udhampur Police intercepted an inter-state drug peddler and recovered nearly 20 kilograms of contraband (poppy straw) during a routine Naka checking at Motor Shed Chenani, on National Highway 44. A taxi bearing registration number UP65FT-6902 was stopped by a team from Police Station Chenani, led by the Station House Officer (SHO),” Police said.
Upon checking the vehicle, two bags, a sky-blue suitcase and a dark-blue bag, belonging to Kuldeep Singh, son of Surjit Singh and resident of Lattianwal, district Kapurthala (Punjab), were recovered from the trunk.
A thorough search revealed 19.79 kg of poppy straw concealed inside the bags. Police promptly registered FIR No 95/2025 under Sections 8/15 of the NDPS Act at Police Station Chenani of Udhampur district.
“Further investigation was underway to trace the source and intended destination of the contraband,” Police said.
