“Entire nation stands with families of Nowgam blast victims,” says LoP Sunil Sharma

Srinagar, Nov 16: Bhartiya Janta Party senior leader and Leader of Opposition (LOP) in Jammu and Kashmir Assembly Sunil Sharma on Sunday visited the residence of tailor Muhammad Shafi, one of the victims of the Nowgam Police Station explosion, to express condolences and explain the sequence of events that led to the tragedy.

Speaking to reporters, Sharma said that the explosion occurred around 11:20 pm while explosive material recovered from Faridabad was being examined at Nowgam Police Station. “The substance was highly inflammable. Since the initial FIRs related to the case were registered at this police station, the material was brought here for further investigation and sealing,” he said.

He added that the first consignment reportedly weighed around 360 kilograms, and multiple teams, including FSL experts, Crime Branch, and local police, were present during the examination. “Tailor Muhammad Shafi had also been called to assist in sealing the material. Due to some lapse, the explosive detonated on the spot, resulting in the death of 10 people and injuries to 28 others,” Sharma said.

Sharma expressed deep sorrow over the incident, noting that both the party leadership and the central government, including the Prime Minister and Home Minister, had conveyed condolences.

He said that on instructions from the central leadership, he and former BJP president Ravinder Raina are personally visiting affected households. “We met the children of Muhammad Shafi, shared their grief, and assured the family of every possible support during this difficult time,” Sharma added.
