The Tiruvallur Collector on Sunday (April 6, 2025) issued an advisory to all shops and commercial establishments in the district to display their names in Tamil as per the rules by May 1, 2025.
“Tamil should be the first and primary language displayed prominently in the name board. English be the second, and if necessary, a third language may be displayed,” an official release from the district Collector said.
“If shops and commercial establishments violated this, a fine would be imposed as per the Tamil Nadu Shops and Establishments Act, 1947 and the Tamil Nadu Shops and Establishments Rules, 1948,” it said.
The Tiruvallur Collector also directed urban and rural local bodies in the district to ensure shops and commercial establishments within their respective jurisdiction displayed their names in Tamil in the name boards.
