Banihal, Dec 07: The desilting operation at the Baglihar Dam in Chanderkoot , Ramban district is currently in full swing, with authorities opening all gates to release accumulated water, silt, and driftwood from the reservoir. The exercise is being carried out as part of routine maintenance to enhance storage capacity and ensure the smooth flow of water downstream.
As the gates of Baglihar Hydroelectric Power Project dam were opened, a massive volume of muddy water, silt, and wooden debris was seen gushing into the River Chenab below the dam, reflecting the extent of sediment build-up over time. The operation aims to safeguard the dam’s efficiency, improve safety, and reduce the risk of blockage, particularly ahead of the rainy season.
Officials at JKPDC Chanderkote told Greater Kashmir that the desilting process began at around 9:30 AM on Sunday, following which power generation at the Baglihar Hydroelectric Power Project was reduced to zero.
People living along the riverbanks have been advised by the officials to remain cautious and avoid venturing near the river due to the sudden increase in water discharge. The district administration is closely monitoring the situation in coordination with the concerned departments to ensure the operation is conducted smoothly and safely, they said.
