Congress decision not to join J&K govt was right: Karra

Kishtwar, Feb 19: J&KPCC President Tariq Hameed Karra today said that the decision of his party not to join the elected government after the 2024 assembly elections was right.

Addressing a workers’ convention here, he said, “We (Congress) fought assembly election in coalition with (National Conference). After results Congress was invited to join cabinet but we decided to stay back, on the principled stand of statehood . Our leadership took a right decision, as we knew that government will be incomplete without powers of statehood. Today we feel that we stand vindicated, as the elected government is not being allowed to take small decisions, which are in public interest.”

Karra asserted that statehood is “our right and we are not going to beg for restoration of our right, dignity, identity and status but shall fight for it, while seeking people’s support, who responded enthusiastically, to take to streets if required.”

The Congress leader accused the centre of not keeping its promise for restoration of statehood.

Justifying the demand of people of Kishtwar and adjoining districts of Chenab region regarding free or subsidised power tariff and uninterrupted power, Karra said government should consider the demand for a suitable mechanism in this regard.
