Srinagar, Dec 22: In a significant boost to connectivity in Kashmir, Indian Railways is planning to launch two new trains next month, according to media reports.
These additions aim to enhance transportation links to the region’s picturesque snowy landscapes.
The two trains include a centrally heated sleeper train and a Vande Bharat train with chair car seating. Notably, the sleeper train will traverse the iconic 359-meter-high Chenab Bridge, a marvel of engineering.
According to sources, the centrally heated sleeper train will operate between New Delhi and Srinagar. Designed for a 13-hour journey, it will pass through breathtaking snow-capped mountain landscapes. However, this train will not offer second-class sleeper accommodations.
A senior railway official added that the connectivity boost also includes an 8-coach Vande Bharat train, equipped with chair car seating. This train will serve the shorter Katra-Baramulla route.
The Vande Bharat train is designed with specialized features to handle Kashmir’s harsh winters. These include silicon heating pads for water tanks to prevent freezing and toilets equipped with warm air systems. Additionally, for the first time in Indian Railways, the loco pilot’s front glass has been designed with embedded heating elements to prevent frosting in sub-zero temperatures.
The Vande Bharat service is expected to significantly reduce travel time. It aims to cover the 246-km distance between Katra and Baramulla in just 3.5 hours, compared to over 10 hours by bus. On the railway network, Baramulla is located 57 km beyond Srinagar.
“Once the Katra-Baramulla Vande Bharat becomes operational, likely by late next month, passengers will be able to seamlessly journey from New Delhi to Katra in the existing Vande Bharat and then transfer to the new service to reach Srinagar or Baramulla,” an official told.
