BJP, Congress caught in direct contest for Gurugram, Ambala mayoral polls

The Bharatiya Janata Party and the Congress are set for a direct contest for the Mayor’s post to Gurugram and Ambala municipal corporations with the candidates only belonging to the two national parties being in the fray on the last day of withdrawal of nominations on Wednesday (February 19, 2025).

As many as 39 candidates for Mayor’s post, 184 candidates for the president’s post and 2,335 candidates for election to municipal wards remained in contest for the election to the civic bodies on the last day of withdrawal of nominations, said Haryana State Election Commissioner Dhanpat Singh.

The elections to 33 municipal bodies, including eight municipal corporations, are slated for March 2. Besides four municipal councils and 21 municipal committees, the by-elections to the mayor’s post for Ambala and Sonipat Municipal Corporations, and three presidents and three members to municipal committees and councils will also be held simultaneously.

While two candidates each are in fray from Gurugam and Ambala municipal corporations for the Mayor’s post, the maximum number of seven candidates are contesting for the post of Hisar’s Mayor followed by six for Faridabad’s Mayor. While five candidates remain in contest each from Rohtak and Sonipat Municipal Corporation for the Mayor’s post, four each will contest from Karnal and Yamuna Nagar.

The last date for withdrawal of nominations for Panipal Municipal Corporation is March 1 and polling is slated for March 9.

The counting of votes for all municipal bodies will take place on March 12.
