Prayagraj: The Allahabad High Court has said while trial courts in the state were at liberty to write their judgments in either Hindi or English, they should not mix both languages when issuing their orders.
The court said so when during the hearing of a case found that a judgment written by the court below was partially in Hindi and partially in English.
A division bench comprising Justice Rajeev Misra and Justice Dr Ajay Kumar-II said so while dismissing a criminal appeal filed by one Vaid Prakash Tyagi- informant in a dowry death case challenging the acquittal of accused-husband.
The court said being a Hindi speaking state, the objective of writing judgments in Hindi is that ordinary litigants can understand the judgment and the reasons assigned by the court for either allowing or rejecting their claim.
The court said the judgment by a sessions court in Agra was a ‘classic example’ of judgments partially in English and partially in Hindi.
In this backdrop, the court in its judgment dated Oct 29 directed that its judgment be placed before the Chief Justice for appropriate action and be circulated to all judicial officers across the state with a ‘hope and trust’ that they will write down their judgments either in Hindi or in English.
