Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman Saturday said the standard of healthcare a patient receives should be at the same level across the state. She was speaking virtually at the 28th convocation of National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (Nimhans).
“The standard of care a patient receives in a remote district of Kalyan-Karnataka or northeast of India should not differ from what he/she gets in Bengaluru,” the minister said in her address.
She noted that key infrastructural upgrades such as a 300-bed polytrauma centre in the institute’s northern campus with a total cost of ₹498 crore has been approved. “This centre will be established on 40-acre land in north Bengaluru to extend high-end emergency and trauma care to accident victims in and around the region.”
The minister said the Centre granted approval for a four-storey OPD complex at the central campus at a total cost of ₹440 crore. “This facility will house 590 clinics and consultation rooms, expanding the institute’s capacity to serve over 5,000 patients each day,” she added.
A total of 251 students received degrees and certificates (223 in person and 28 in absentia); excellence awards were presented to 28 meritorious students at the convocation.
