AIIMS Jammu initiates GI, HPB cancer surgeries

Jammu, Feb 19: The All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Jammu has launched a major new healthcare initiative with the initiation of Gastrointestinal (GI) and HepatoPancreatoBiliary (HPB) cancer surgeries at its state-of-the-art facility.

In a groundbreaking development for cancer treatment in India, AIIMS Jammu successfully conducted its first-ever colon cancer surgery, marking a significant step forward in enhancing healthcare capabilities in the Union Territory (UT).

The surgery was performed by Dr Sahil Sandal, Head (officiating), Department of Surgical Gastroenterology, assisted by Dr Vinay and Dr Ayush. The anesthesia team comprised Dr Sandipika Dogra and Dr Manpreet. The patient underwent a left hemicolectomy with a covering ileostomy for descending colon cancer and was discharged uneventfully on the fifth postoperative day.

Prof (Dr) Shakti Kumar Gupta, ED and CEO of AIIMS Jammu, while describing it as a proud moment for everyone in the institute, stated, “This milestone ensures that patients now have access to advanced cancer treatment options within their local community, reducing the need to travel to distant cities.”

He said that the introduction of cancer surgeries was expected to significantly alleviate the healthcare burden on residents of Jammu and Kashmir, providing them with critical care at the early stages of diagnosis.
