Delhi government is preparing a policy to promote the animation, visual effects, comics and gaming sector.
The initiative aims to strengthen the city’s creative economy and create employment for the youth, a senior official said. The digital and creative industries will be among the fastest growing sectors in the coming years, and positioning Delhi as a leading centre is a priority, he added. The policy aims to attract talent from across the country.
Government sources said the draft policy is expected to be finalised by Dec. It will be shared publicly for suggestions and feedback from people, industry experts and other stakeholders. The final draft will be presented to the cabinet for approval. Government plans to implement the policy by early 2026.
Government plans to develop training institutes and startup hubs under the framework. Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the sector will get support, and effort will be made to get them financial assistance, the official said.
Another aspect of the policy will be to integrate traditional art and heritage with digital techniques to showcase the country’s cultural identity using innovation.
Earlier this month, Delhi government’s tourism department partnered with Netflix to screen the animated series, called Kurukshetra. It plans to get involved in more such collaborations.
In Sept, the Maharashtra cabinet cleared an animation, visual effects, gaming, comics and extended reality (AVGC-XR) policy with a roadmap till 2050. Under the policy, AVGC-XR hubs will be created in Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Pune, Satara and Nagpur.
Last year, the Union cabinet approved a proposal to set up the National Centre of Excellence for Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming, Comics and Extended Reality on the lines of the IITs and IIMs. The centre, to come up in Mumbai, will have regional centres in other cities.
