The Kerala State Human Rights Commission has taken suo motu cognizance of the incident in which a young man from Chalakudy died after collapsing on a train and lying unattended on the Mulangunnathukavu railway platform due to the unavailability of an ambulance.
The commission has directed both the police and the railway authorities to submit a detailed report within 15 days regarding the alleged lapses that led to the tragedy.
The incident occurred on October 6 when the youth, travelling on a train, collapsed after experiencing chest pain. He was then taken out of the train at the Mulangunnathukavu station, where he was reportedly laid on the platform for nearly half an hour without medical assistance. He died by the time an ambulance arrived and was taken to the Thrissur Government Medical College Hospital.
While the Railways claimed that medical arrangements had been made at the railway station, the victim’s family members disputed this, and alleged that negligence of the railway authorities caused his death.
The family has filed a formal complaint, and the police have launched an investigation. The human rights commission intervened after reports highlighted the delay and alleged negligence that cost the young man his life.
