Rains delay harvest, brighten apple colour

Shopian, Oct 6: Heavy rains have disrupted apple picking operations in the higher reaches of south Kashmir but enhanced the glow of the fruit.

The higher belts of Shopian and Kulgam districts, including Heerpora, Sedow, Chotipora, Kellar, Watoo, and Manzgam, known for their high-quality apple orchards, have been experiencing continuous rainfall since early Monday morning.

However, many growers said that while the precipitation has delayed harvesting, it could also prove beneficial by enhancing the colour and overall quality of the fruit.

“We have stopped harvesting temporarily as we wait for the rains to stop,” said Tariq Ahmad, a farmer from Shopian. “We are gathering and sorting the apples that were already picked, but a significant portion of the crop remains on the trees.”

According to local estimates, nearly half of the apple produce is still on the trees in the upper reaches.

“Around 35 to 40 percent of produce is yet to be harvested in the upper reaches of south Kashmir, particularly in Shopian,” said Muhammad Ashraf, president of Fruit Mandi Shopian. “Some rain has actually improved the appearance of the apples, giving them a richer colour, which could fetch better prices in the market. However, the uncertainty over the weather is making harvesting decisions difficult.”

Growers are closely monitoring weather forecasts to ensure that the remaining fruit is not damaged by prolonged exposure to rain or snow.

Weather officials say a Western Disturbance is expected to bring more rain and snow to parts of J&K between October 5 and 7. Light rainfall was reported in Srinagar and nearby areas, while intermittent showers continued across the plains of north and south Kashmir. Officials in the Agriculture Department urged farmers to take precautions to safeguard their produce. “Proper storage and timely collection of already harvested apples are crucial to prevent spoilage during the rainy spell,” an official said.
