Under-construction footbridge collapses in Udhampur after heavy rains

Ramban, Aug 2: An under-construction footbridge connecting Narsoo and Swena blocks in Jammu and Kashmir’s Udhampur district collapsed following torrential rains and rising water levels in a rivulet, officials said Saturday.

Locals said the steel bridge, which was in its launching stage, gave way due to excessive water flow and strong winds. The bridge was considered vital as it links several villages in the two blocks.

Residents have urged authorities to reconstruct the bridge without delay.

District Development Council (DDC) members have brought the issue to the attention of district officials and Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh.

Additional District Development Commissioner (ADC) Rajinder Singh confirmed the incident and said the administration has taken cognizance of the matter.
