Elon Musk’s Tesla is set to open its first showroom in India at Maker Maxity Mall at Bandra Kurla Complex, Mumbai. Indian law firm Trilegal has advised Maker Group on its licensing of 4,000 sq ft space in Mumbai’s financial heartbeat to Tesla, India.
The transaction marks a significant milestone in the Indian automotive and retail landscape, as it facilitates Tesla’s long-anticipated debut in the world’s third-largest automobile market.
The showroom, being billed as the Tesla Experience Centre, is likely to be the first of many such stores, as the automobile giant looks to expand its presence in New Delhi and Gurugram, according to media reports.
The presence of Tesla at Maker Maxity at Mumbai’s elite financial district sets a precedent for the growing influx of international marquee names entering the Indian market, Trilegal said in a statement.
According to reports, Tesla does not have plans for a manufacturing unit in India yet and cars will be priced steeply owing to high import taxes.
The Trilegal real estate team advising on the matter was led by partner Monika Bhonsale and included counsel Maithili Vagal and associate Saee Pendse.
