Speaker calls for national unity

Jammu, Apr 28: J&K Legislative Assembly Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather Monday asserted the objective behind calling a special session of the House was to convey a message to the entire world that the whole country was united in war against terrorism.

Speaker made this assertion at the very outset of the special session which began with an obituary reference as he referred to the tragic incident of terrorist attack on innocent tourists at Baisaran Pahalgam on April 22, 2025.

ìTourists had come to relax; find a few moments of solace and rejuvenate themselves. However, their sojourn was cut short by this cowardly terrorist attack which claimed 26 precious lives of people, hailing from different parts of the country. It not only devastated their families but also left the entire nation grieving,î Rather said.

Denouncing the act, he stated, ìWe, on behalf of the House, condemn this brazen act of hate-soaked terror, which has shaken entire humanity and share our full solidarity with the families of the victims while reiterating our resolve for justice, unity and communal harmony.î

ìThis attack reminds us of those challenges being confronted by all of us,î he said referring to harassment of J&K citizens in other parts of the country, as a fallout of the terror act.

The Speaker appealed to the Government to take immediate and resolute measures to ensure the safety of J&K students, traders, tourists and other citizens in different states of the country.

He also urged all Members of the august House to ìcooperate to create a conducive atmosphere for tourists and citizens of J&K.î

Rather delineated that the incident brought to the fore the significance of communal harmony and unity to fight terrorism.

Lets resolve to renew our commitment for peace, communal harmony and compassion while paying tributes to the victims of terror attacks so that their sacrifices donít go wasted and we emerge stronger while facing all challenges,î Rather said.

He appealed to the Members of the House to observe two minutes of silence as a mark of respect and tribute to the victims of the attack.
