Naihati Trinamool Congress MLA Sanat Dey blamed the Bharatiya Janata Party supporters including former Barrackpore MP Arjun Singh for the murder. Mr. Singh, however, said that he had nothing to do with the crime and it is a result of personal enmity between the deceased and other miscreants.
“A person identified as Santosh Yadav was travelling by an e-rickshaw and two bikes intercepted him and attacked him with bricks. We have got CCTV footage. There were personal issues between the deceased and those who attacked him,” Barrackpore Police Commissioner Alok Rajoria told journalists.
Series of murders
The murder comes within a month of the killing of a Trinamool Congress worker at Malda’s Kaliachak. Another Trinamool Congress councillor Dulal Sarkar was killed at Malda on January 2.
The Barrackpore subdivision of North 24 Parganas has also witnessed several murders in broad daylight including that of Ashok Shaw, a booth president of the Trinamool Congress of ward number 12 of Bhatpara Municipality on November 13. Mr. Shaw was also killed in broad daylight outside a tea stall by miscreants who indiscriminately fired upon him.

These back to back incidents have raised questions on the law and order situation in the State. Earlier this month, Sajjak Alam, an accused who escaped police custody after firing at two policemen was killed in a police encounter at Goalpokhar in West Bengal’s Uttar Dinajpur district on January 18.
