Srinagar, Nov 5: The Army has inducted 550 ‘Asmi’ machine pistols, a robust and compact weapon crafted for close-quarter battles and specialised operations in Jammu and Kashmir.
Featuring a unique semi-bullpup design, the ‘Asmi’ allows for single-handed operation, serving effectively as both a pistol and a submachine gun.
The new addition, developed by Colonel Prasad Bansod of the Army in collaboration with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and manufactured by Hyderabad-based Lokesh Machines, strengthens India’s push towards self-reliance in defence through the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
The Army’s choice to incorporate the ‘Asmi’ into the Northern Command is a strategic move, especially given the command’s pivotal role along India’s northern borders, where readiness and adaptability are crucial.
The addition of this machine pistol equips troops with a modern weapon that is not only home-grown but also tailored to meet the evolving demands of modern warfare.
“In a significant boost to the nation’s #Atmanirbharta initiative, #IndianArmy inducted 550 ‘Asmi’ machine pistols into #NorthernCommand. Its unique semi-bullpup design allows for single-handed operation both as a pistol and submachine gun.”
“Its induction into the Army highlights the armed forces’ commitment to bolstering indigenous capabilities and reducing dependency on foreign weaponry,” a senior Army officer of Northern Command said. “The Army envisions the ‘Asmi’ as a cornerstone for specialized operations, with a design that aligns with the high standards of India’s modern defence needs.”
The senior officer said that the ‘Asmi’ machine pistol is tailored for close-quarter battles and tactical operations, with a semi-bullpup design that makes it highly versatile and suitable for single-handed operation as both a pistol and a submachine gun.
“The weapon’s robust build, combined with its compact design, makes it ideal for high-mobility scenarios and indoor operations where speed and manoeuvrability are critical,” he said. “The semi-bullpup configuration allows for an ergonomic grip and balance, aiding in accuracy and ease of use under high-pressure conditions. With a lightweight frame and cutting-edge engineering, the ‘Asmi’ can transition seamlessly between roles, making it an invaluable asset for soldiers operating in close quarters, as well as those engaged in specialised missions.”
