A division bench of the MP High Court on Monday issued notices to respondents, including film actress Kangana Ranaut, home ministry, information and broadcasting ministry, and social media platforms including YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram associated with the making and publicity of the film Emergency in response to a petition seeking a ban on the film.
The petition has been filed by Jabalpur Sikh Sangat and Sri Guru Singh Sabha in Indore.
While some respondents accepted the notice in court through their lawyers, notices will be served to the remaining ones through electronic mode.
The bench of acting Chief Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva and Justice Vinay Saraf will hear the petition on Tuesday. All the respondents have been asked by the court to present their replies before or at the time of the hearing on Tuesday.
Appearing for the petitioners, advocate N. S. Ruprah said that in the trailer of the movie Emergency, the Sikh community has not been portrayed in a good way, and screening of the movie will vitiate the atmosphere and lead to communal unrest.
Ruprah said that the Sikh community has made huge sacrifices for the country, and it has always been at the forefront in serving the nation. Community’s portrayal in the film has led to grave resentment among the Sikhs, petitioner’s counsel said.
Following the initial hearing, the court issued notices to the respondents seeking a response.
