Wearing a sari during the wedding season is a quintessential fashion statement in India. However, pairing this traditional ensemble with high heels often feels like walking a tightrope—both figuratively and literally. As much as stilettos elevate the elegance of a sari, they can also make navigating events a daunting task, with risks ranging from discomfort to outright foot pain.
But there’s a unique and innovative solution, inspired by none other than the legendary singer Usha Uthup.
Though renowned for her powerful voice and timeless music, Uthup, who loves her Kanjeevaram saris, has found a way to harmonise comfort with style: Kanjeevaram sneakers. In a recent video with Red FM, Uthup shared how she transitioned from wearing high heels with her saris to embracing sneakers crafted from Kanjeevaram sari fabric.
Her decision stemmed from years of enduring the discomfort associated with stilettos. Speaking candidly in the video, Uthup revealed that her daughter planted the seed of this brilliant idea, prompting her to collaborate with two cobblers to create customised sneakers.
“I just give them my Kanjeevaram sari and my sneakers, and they create magic,” Uthup explained, talking about her cobblers Mishri and Sudhir. These sneakers are not just functional but also stylish, reflecting the vibrant aesthetics of Kanjeevaram silk.
For Uthup, the shift to Kanjeevaram sneakers is deeply personal. “I come from a very middle-class family, and for us, fashion is consistency, constancy, and above all, comfort,” she remarked.
The practicality of sneakers for events, particularly those involving prolonged standing or dancing, is undeniable. By transforming sari fabric into footwear, Uthup has proven that comfort need not come at the cost of style.
Uthup shared that she also introduced the project to the President of India, seeking support for cobblers across the country.

For those preparing for wedding season, Uthup’s innovation is a reminder that elegance can come with ease. Here are some tips from celebrity stylist Rishi Raj on how to pair your sneakers with ethnic outfits:
- Choose sneakers that match or complement the colours of your outfit. Eg- Pastel-toned sneakers pair well with pastel lehengas or kurtas, while metallic or embellished sneakers work perfectly with traditional outfits like silk saris or Banarasi lehengas.
- Opt for sneakers with embroidery. Sequins or mirrors work to maintain the ethnic vibe. These details can echo the design elements of your outfit.
- Pair fitted or structured ethnic outfits like a sharara or a dhoti pant set with chunky sneakers for a contemporary contrast. Flowy outfits like anarkalis or lehengas look best with sleeker low-profile sneakers. Balance the silhouette.
- Floral or paisley print sneakers can add a playful touch to traditional outfits, especially for day events like mehendi or haldi.
So, whether you’re the bride, a bridesmaid, or a guest, consider stepping into a pair of customised sneakers to dance the night away—effortlessly and in style.
